The Department of Environmental Conservation has extended the ban on burning of brush through October 10th this year due to an increased fire hazard statewide. During this period, the East Herkimer Fire Department acting as Town Fire Wardens will NOT sign burn permits. Please contact the DEC direct if you have any questions.

6 NYCRR Part 215, Open Fires
Section 215.3 (a) is amended as follows:

Section 215.3 Exceptions and restricted burning.
Burning in an open fire, provided it is not contrary to other law or regulation, will be allowed as follows:
(a) On-site burning in any town with a total population less than 20,000 of downed limbs and branches (including branches with attached leaves or needles) less than six inches in diameter and eight feet in length between [May 15th] October 11th and the following March 15th.

In the early morning hours of Thursday July 12, 2012 the East Herkimer Fire Department responded to a residential structure fire on McKennan Road. The occupant of the residence met firefighters outside and reported that he had also saved his cat. The fire was placed under control in approximately 30 minutes however the home was heavily damaged by heat, smoke, and water. EHFD was assisted at the scene by Mohawk, Frankfort, and Schuyler Fire Departments as well as MOVAC. Herkimer Fire Department established a fill site at a hydrant in the village. The Red Cross assisted the occupant of the residence and the East Herkimer Ladies Auxiliary provided hydration and refreshments for emergency responders.

The occupant reported that his smoke alarm woke him from a sound sleep, allowing him to escape safely. Please take the time to test your smoke alarms and make sure that you have one in each bedroom, outside of your sleeping area, and on each floor so that you will have adequate warning. Also practice your home escape plan with you family to make sure that you are prepared.

The East Herkimer Fire Department responded late Thursday night 6/26 to assist Little Falls at the scene of a fully involved structure fire at the Little Falls Lumber Company on Southern Ave. EHFD provided an engine company and manpower at the scene. Little Falls was also assisted by Herkimer FD and Mohawk FD who stood by at their station.
