Notice of Public Hearing East Herkimer Fire District

Please take notice that a special meeting of the Board of Commissioners of the East Herkimer Fire District will take place at 7:00 pm on the evening of Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at the East Herkimer Fire Station, 193 Main Road, East Herkimer. The purpose of the meeting, pursuant to Town Law Section 105, is to present the preliminary 2017 budget to all interested residents and to receive and act on any comments offered regarding said budget. The preliminary budget is an increase of 3.00% over the 2016 budget.

All concerned citizens of the East Herkimer Fire District (which includes all of the Town of Herkimer outside the Village) are invited to attend this meeting.

Help prevent outdoor cooking fires!

Grilling fire safety tips:
* Only use grills outdoors, away from siding and deck railings.
* Clean grills often and remove grease or fat build-up.
* Make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting.
* Have a three foot safe-zone around grills and campfires. Keep kids and pets clear of the area.
* Dispose of coals after they have cooled in a metal can.
* Never leave grills, fire pits and patio torches unattended.Source: U.S. Fire Administration

Wildfires: Protect yourself and your community

Personal responsibility

Create an emergency bag of personal items that you will need if you are asked to leave your home.
Leave your home when asked to do so.
Make and frequently practice a family evacuation plan that includes meeting locations, a communication plan and pet accommodations.
Clean your roof, gutters and deck of dead leaves and pine needles often.
Use building and yard materials that won’t burn easily.
Keep an area up to 200 feet around your home lean, clean and green.

Community preparedness

Follow evacuation instructions from your local emergency officials.
Practice two ways out of your neighborhood; you will be more prepared if roads are blocked.
Hold community meetings and work with neighbors to prepare the neighborhood for wildfires.
Make sure driveways and house numbers are clearly marked and can be seen from the road.
Meet with your local fire department. Find out how department personnel can help you prepare for wildfires.
